Carol P. Christ and Judith Plaskow will discuss and read from their new book Goddess and God in the World: Conversations in Embodied Theology. Their theological conversation begins from the premise that the transcendent, omnipotent male God of traditional theologies must be replaced with new understandings of divinity that can provide orientation and guidance as we face the social, political, and environmental challenges of our time. They propose a new method for thinking about theological questions: embodied theology, rooted in experience and tested in dialogue. Their probing of the autobiographical sources of their theologies combined with an intense questioning of each other's views offers both a new way of speaking about Goddess and God and a fruitful model of theological conversation across difference.
About the Instructors: Carol P. Christ and Judith Plaskow met while earning Ph.D.s in Religious Studies from Yale University. They co-edited the path-breaking anthologies, Womanspirit Rising and Weaving the Visions and helped to define the study of women and religion. Judith wrote the first Jewish feminist theology, Standing Again at Sinai, while Carol wrote the first Goddess feminist theology, Rebirth of the Goddess. Judith is Professor Emerita of Religious Studies at Manhattan College; Carol leads the semi-annual Goddess Pilgrimage to Crete through the Ariadne Institute.
