Explore the spirituality of the Religious Life (Vita Apostolica) from early monasticism until the present day. Learn about the beginnings of monasticism in the waning days of the Roman Empire, followed by the rich diversification of spirituality and religious life in the middle ages and the Enlightenment era. The Rev. Dr. Markey will add some reflections on the future of the religious life. It is no longer reserved for priests and monastics, but all Christians, lay and ordained, Catholic and Protestant, are called to holiness and the spiritual life.

About the Instructor: Rev. John J. Markey, OP, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Theology at Oblate School of Theology and the Director of the Ph.D. program in Contemporary Spirituality. Fr. Markey is a friar in the Order of Preachers (commonly referred to as the Dominicans). Fr. Markey is the author of numerous articles on spirituality and theology and has written two books: Creating Communion: The Theology of the Constitutions of the Church (2004), and most recently Moses in Pharaoh’s House: A Liberation Spirituality for North America (2014.)
