How do Jewish commentators interpret the creation text in the Hebrew Bible? How are the commentaries helpful in better understanding the text? The ancient Rabbis introduced scores of novel interpretations of the Biblical story of the origins of the world and human beings. For example, they wondered why God initially fashioned only one human being. One explanation was that this emphasized human equality, so that later no one could claim superior ancestry since we are all descended from the same person. This is one of many unusual and unconventional Rabbinic insights into the Creation narrative, which we shall explore in this course.
