CHILDREN’S EDUCATION - SUNDAYS

Children’s Choir (9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.)

Room: Community Room
Director: Valerie Thompson
UPC Children’s Choir is open to all interested children in grades 1-5. We rehearse every Sunday morning in the Community Room (or in the Sanctuary on singing Sundays.) Choir members learn about music and scripture as they prepare anthems to offer in worship. Come share our love of singing our praises to the glory of God!

Preschool (9:30 a.m. - 10:30a.m.)
Room: UPCC Room 4
Teachers: Amy Carter-Kemp, Sara Holland, and Valerie Thompson
Children age three by Sept. 1, 2009, through pre-kinder are invited to share our sacred stories. Valerie Thompson will gather the children with song. Sara and Amy will share Bible stories, beginning with the Beatitudes, using Godly Play and a modified version of Way of the Child. Later in the school-year, the class will focus on scriptures pertaining to the liturgical seasons such as Advent and Lent. The children reflect on the stories with art materials, and share a feast. Please advise the teachers of allergies or any other special needs.

Kinder through Fifth Grade (9:30 a.m. - 10:30a.m.)
Rooms: CE 5, CE 6 and CE 7
Teachers: Lenna and Ed Baxter, Cindi Catlin and Nicole Foy, Keri Kinsey and John Rezentes
UPC Sunday school participants and teachers will continue the journey with the multi-age curriculum focusing on spiritual formation, Way of the Child. This is our fourth year with this dynamic program. The Sunday school year will begin on September 13th with an orientation, as this way of learning requires practicing spiritual disciplines that may be new to some of the children and families. Throughout the Fall we will explore the parables of Jesus as well as other meaningful scriptures, Alternative Gift Market activities, and a celebration of Advent and Epiphany.

Newly minted first graders: As you are now eligible to sing in the Children’s Choir, you are also invited to stay in worship. There are many terrific books under the organ loft stairs to read if the sermon becomes a bit too long for you. Children’s bulletins are a great resource, too. Bulletins often ask for your help. If they do, please put your work in the offering plate and be sure to put your name on it.

General Information
_
Watch the UPC weekly email for stories and themes the children are studying. Following up on the ride home after church increases the learning, as does reading the bible stories ahead of time.
_ Please pick children up promptly so teachers may collect their own children.
_ Before worship is a good time to get drinks and use the restroom.

Little Ones in Worship

Children are encouraged to participate in Sunday School and worship in the sanctuary with their family members until the children's moments are completed. Children's books are available in the Narthex for reading by children during the service. University strives to offer a worship service that is child friendly.

Our Nursery is open to infants through age six. The nursery is lovingly managed by staff members of our Children's Center. .The nursery is available on Sunday morning from 9:00 until 12:30 and for special events. Stop by and introduce yourself to the wonderful and caring staff. Wait until your children see the playground!

Additionally, our Narthex is now available as a "cryroom". The worship service can be seen and heard as you walk a fussy child or let a restless toddler roam.

Please pick children up promptly
so teachers may collect their own children. Children’s choir members are invited to gather on “singing Sundays” without adult supervision.

Before worship is a good time to get drinks and use the restroom.
